Announcing Wilderness Skills Camps 2010!

We are offering  three types of summer camps in 2010, in three different locations.

Deep Forest Camp

July 19-23rd at Pickards Mountain Eco Institute in Chapel Hill, NC

Deep Forest camp focuses on the joy and sense of adventure that springs from spending time in the wilderness. It features age-old skills and experiences which help us feel at home in the woods.

The Deep Forest program provides a step by step process to learning skills such as fire making, hunting, plant medicine, and animal tracking. It allows every student to choose their own challenges and provides opportunities for them to mentor each other.  Deep in the forest at Pickards Mountain, we create a culture of active learning that helps each person hone their natural abilities with the support and context of a nature mentoring community.

Deep Forest Camp runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday-Friday.  Please contact us for more information about extended day options.

Mountain Odyssey and Bear Camp

Overnight programs in the Appalachian Mountains!
Camps offered in collaboration with Schoolhouse of Wonder

Mountain Odyssey June 27-July 3 for ages 10-13.

Bear Camp---August 1-7 for ages 14-17.

Mountain Odyssey, our backpacking camp for younger campers (10-13 years) will return to Grayson Highlands, Mt. Rogers, Virginia to embark upon a week of wilderness and backpack camping.  Sunsets, sunrises, star-filled night skies, fresh meadow blueberries, fire-baked brownies and cold mountain streams are all a part of this phenomenal adventure.

Our new site exploration for the older campers (14-17 years), Bear Camp centers around the idea of living more harmoniously with the Earth and with each other.  Developing respect for the natural world is at the essence of our heart-filled adventure in the wilderness.  Nestled deep in the wilderness, the mountainous terrain rises out of the Piedmont and offers spectacular vistas on the world below, waterfalls and many miles of trails. Location TBD.

Both of these wilderness excursions will include:

  • A day-long “walkabout” adventure in the wilderness
  • Community living
  • Camp craft
  • Directions and mapping
  • Cooking on the fire
  • Meal preparations
  • Naturalist skills
  • Night hike and stargazing
